FreeportCAN Action Group:

Government Affairs

The dangers of climate change require urgent, large scale, and systemic changes. To be effective in time, these changes must be made on a governmental level, and citizens must motivate their government to act. Civic engagement is the only way to ensure that the government acts according to the public will.

Impact

The Government Affairs Action Group works with the Town of Freeport, the State of Maine and, occasionally, regional and federal government agencies to enact policies and implement projects that counter the adverse effects of climate change.

This occurs through research, advocacy and joint participation in select projects. The Government Affairs action group has successfully advocated for the hiring of a sustainability coordinator to work for both Freeport and Yarmouth, the creation of a municipal rebate program for electric efficiency devices (e.g., heat pumps) and the adoption of a stretch building code that will reduce the emission of greenhouse gases from residential buildings.

The FreeportCAN Government Affairs Action Group advocates for government climate action in Freeport and Maine. Further below you will discover various issues we’ve acted on, and calls to action that invite your valued voice.

To effectively take action to slow or reverse the path of climate change, we must amplify our voices to advocate for stronger environmental leadership and decision-making by all levels of government.
