Freeport Town Council adopts MUBEC energy stretch code

FreeportCAN is Instrumental in Freeport’s Adoption of Stretch Code

Thanks to the great turnout and impassioned, eloquent love of this place shown in the supporting testimony of members of our action group, as well as the show of hands by the other many supporters in the room, the Freeport Town Council voted unanimously to adopt the 2021 MUBEC energy stretch code, effective July 1, 2023.

The stretch building code, which requires greater energy efficiency in new construction, will result in fewer greenhouse gas emissions, long-term energy savings for residents and greater comfort for residents. This is believed to be only the third such initiative in the state of Maine.

Other people were present via Zoom, ready to speak up if it looked like their voices were needed.  FreeportCAN was acknowledged as being the driving force for the Council action. As one Council member, Ed Bradley, said after the vote: See what you can accomplish by group action making your voices heard.

Freeport has joined South Portland, Portland and other forward looking Maine municipalities  in holding itself out as a leader in local action to help lessen the causes of climate change.
