With back-to-school shopping underway, choosing secondhand can also help families save money while reducing waste.

Fashion’s oversized climate impact

Fashion has a significant climate impact, contributing substantially to global carbon emissions through the production, transportation, and disposal of clothing. Carbon emissions due to the manufacturing and consumption of clothing is estimated around 10% of total greenhouse gasses released worldwide. Humans are producing so many clothes that the fashion industry’s carbon emissions are about equal to the greenhouse gasses of the entire economies of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Shopping secondhand keeps clothing in circulation longer and reduces the demand for new resources.
