March’s Action: Reduce Your Electricity Use

The great news when it comes to climate change is that we have solutions that we can implement now, and that will go a long way towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We covered many of them in our February EcoHomes blog. But when it comes to talking about solutions, a lot of focus is placed on electrification, and replacing our energy from fossil fuels with renewable energy sources, with less emphasis on REDUCING energy use. Therefore, we wanted to focus this month’s EcoHomes blog on some of the simple things we can do to cut down on our monthly electricity use – and as a result, our electric bills!

Consider Energy-Efficient Products

Energy-efficient products like LED light bulbs and energy-efficient appliances can have a big impact. Look for products with the ENERGY STAR label, which means they meet strict energy efficiency guidelines.

And in the”Good News” category – Congress just strengthened the Energy Star program. Congress just strengthened the Energy Star program, allocating just over $33 million to the Environmental Protection Agency for the program. This is slightly more than was allocated in the 2024 fiscal year.

Fight phantom power consumption

Plug countertop appliances and electronic devices into a power bar and program it to switch off at night.

This bill would allow residents to use small, portable plug‑in solar devices that can be plugged into a standard wall outlet, making clean energy ownership accessible to anyone whose homes aren’t suitable for traditional solar.

Recently voted out of committee, this bill will head to thebSenate floor for a full vote soon. We can reach out to our state lawmakers to let them know that legislation designed expand access to affordable, clean energy – has broad support in Maine!
